GLO #3 Technology Literacy

GLO #3  Technology Literacy

Students will demonstrate the appropriate use of technology tools, evaluate the quality of sources, and incorporate technology into daily work.
  • Access, analyze, and evaluate information and resources
  • Personalize learning
  • Create and communicate
  • Engage in global projects and issues
  • Adapt to new technologies
  • Ethical use

As a district there have been some major efforts to build these skills both with students and teachers.  Technology literacy has been embedded into professional development and leadership team meetings.  Teachers are embracing the mindset of exploring with students and using technology in purposeful ways.   The world of technology is an ever evolving world and it calls learners to accept and embrace the constant status of learner regardless of your level of expertise. Our learning is being supported also with a great repository of resources through the Hudson Elementary Schools Professional Learning Website

I have seen some meaningful use of technology throughout the building which hits at the heart of this GLO!  This 5th grade mini-inquiry asks the question: How does technology impact my learning.

HP 5th graders have been investigating how technology affects their learning by interviewing business owners, Chris Deleon from the Middle School, Mary B-E, and Heidi Hayes- Jacobs.  They have also been reading articles, watching videos, and learning how technology impacts their learning.

You are invited to join us on Wed. May 21 from 3:30-6 in the media center to showcase our learning.  Students will be demonstrating specific tools that show their use of technology to collaborate, create, and learn.  Treats will be provided.

If you would like to donate to increase access for our students please follow our link
Check out our HP Blog Page to follow our inquiry.

Listing an idea or two in the comment box here will provide a network of support so that if a colleague is interested in trying something new they can connect with someone who has already tried it!

GLO #2- Global Literacy

GLO #2- Global Literacy

Students will understand how world cultures and global issues connect to their lives.  Students will communicate in more than one language.
  • World languages K-12
  • Value commonalities, patterns, and differences across cultures
  • Interact successfully with other from diverse backgrounds
  • Global citizenship

HP is looing at how to reach out to the world through partnerships with students in outher countries,

Hudson Hero projects, and looking at our Integrated unit topics through multiple perspectives.

As educators we have the opportunity and obligation to provide both mirrors and windows for our students to better understand themselves and others.  In the article Multicultural Literature and Discussion as Mirror and Window? by Jocelyn Glazier and Jung-A Seo, a case is made for using literature as a launching point for developing global literacy through open dialogue.  .

We are fortunate to have the Destiny Library system which enables students to find books about regions around the world quite easily through the Destiny Library visual search engine!  If you haven’t tried it here is a quick screencast to show you how!

Looking to purchase some books for your classroom library?  Here is a great list with recommended titles:

Do you have a favorite book that you use with your students to help promote our Global Literacy GLO with students?  What are some of the other things you do to promote Global Literacy in your classroom?  What are some ideas for things we COULD do as a school?  Let’s see how many ideas we can share through the comment section below:

GLO #1 Foundational Content Areas

GLO #1 Foundational Content Areas

Students will demonstrate skill, knowledge, and understanding of foundational content areas while recognizing and applying connections across all disciplines.
Key areas:

The WI DPI website has links to all of the standards we have for the students which are expectations for what students should know and be able to do.  Check out the vision of our state and the links to all sets of standards that act s a framework for our foundational content GLO.

District level leadership teams in all the content areas help us to focus our instructional efforts and make the most of our time with students.  Our SMART Goals and now our SLOs focus on the level at which our students are growing toward competency in this GLO area.  Data collection and analysis allow us to make shifts during the year to ensure progress!  The work being done with Integrated Units is providing a structure that facilitates student opportunities to apply their learning across all disciplines in a meaningful and engaging way.

The state and federal government monitors growth of our students based on this GLO but for us, it is but a starting point in what we want for our future graduates.  The Hudson School District Professional Development Website is meant to make it easier for teachers to revisit professional development and learning related to teaching and curriculum.  On the website you can revisit any training at any time to help you be more confident as you work to help student establish a solid foundation for learning through content area work.
